Eastern 248 Tournament Edition Nominated For Best New Product At Newport International Boat Show
The Newport International Boat Show is, traditionally, the first show of the new boat season at which manufacturers launch their new sail and power boats, as well as new boating products. Recognizing this, the Show has long identified those companies that bring their new product introductions to Newport. And, for the past few years, the best of the new boats and products have been selected in conjunction with Cruising World, Sailing World and MotorBoating magazines. Nominees to this year’s Newport For New Products program were announced recently and include the Eastern 248 Tournament Edition from Eastern Boats, Inc.
Working from their 248 Explorer platform, they outfitted the Tournament Edition for the serious fisherman. Features include in-floor fish box complete with pump out as well as a transom livewell. They made the L-shaped settee standard and installed a hand wash sink, cutting board and tackle station. Some of the other features include a leaning post in exchange for the captains chair, additional rod holders and a roof mounted rocket launcher. To round out the new look, the 248 Tournament is finished off with new graphics.
One of the five largest in-water boat shows in the country, the Newport International Boat Show covers over 15 acres along America’s Cup Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. More than 850 exhibitors with over 700 boats ranging in size from 16 to 85 feet are expected to be on display, including express cruising yachts, racing sailboats, ocean-going trawlers at PassageMaker magazine’s TrawlerPort, a Multihull Lagoon, plus DownEast styles, sport fishing boats, runabouts, kayaks, canoes and inflatables. In addition, there are engines, sails, equipment, safety products, electronics plus thousands of accessories and marine services, as well as seminars, demonstrations and workshops.
The Show runs from Thursday, September 17 through Sunday, September 20. Advance discount tickets are available on line thru September 16th. Tickets purchased at the show on Thursday, VIP Day, are $27.00…$24 on-line. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the tickets are $18.00…$15 on-line. Children under 12 are free every day when accompanied by an adult. For more information about the Show, call 401-846-1115 or 800-582-7846 or visit our web site at www.newportboatshow.com. The Eastern boat and Chevy truck Grand Prizes will be awarded by luck of the draw to one of four anglers who catch the largest striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, or bonito from either the shore and boat division in the month-long Derby.
The non-profit September/October Derby is run entirely by volunteers and relies on support from a wide range of sponsors for its $300,000+ in cash and prize awards. A special committee was formed in May when the Derby learned that long-time sponsor Boston Whaler was going to step aside.
“We are pleased to be involved with the Derby and all they do to promote responsible angling for all ages in New England”, said Eastern Owner Bob Bourdeau. “The Derby’s 63 years of tradition speaks for itself and we are happy to be a grand prize sponsor and new part of the Derby family”.
“While several manufacturers were contacted, Eastern Boats was a perfect fit for us. They are a New England company building boats right here, which are specifically designed to perform in our waters. We hope this is the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial relationship”, added Ed Jerome, Derby President.

New England Aquarium Purchases Eastern 27'
Eastern boats, Inc. recently completed a 27’ Chesapeake for the New England Aquarium. The Lophius will be mainly used by their divers to collect specimens for various exhibits at the Aquarium, including the New England Tidepool and Gulf of Maine exhibits. It will be used mostly in local waters (Massachusetts Bay), but will make annual trips to Eastport, Maine and occasional trips south of the Cape. Their 1984 Eastern 22’ was used occasionally for marine mammal rescue and release work in addition to its regular duties as a collection vessel.
Aquarium Curator John Dayton expects the 27’ may also be used for the same purpose. Their Eastern 22’ spent several years in a row in Delaware Bay long-lining for sand tiger sharks. It also spent many summers in Woods Hole collecting little tunny (aka false albacore) for the Aquarium. You can visit their website at www.neaq.org to learn more information about news, events and research currently being conducted by the Aquarium.
The new Eastern 27’ sports a 250HP Evinrude E-Tec with Hydraulic steering, and a tuna door for easy water access.
Thanks to John and his crew for the great pictures.

The Eastern 18' Classic
The Eastern 18' Classic that started it all 25 years ago is back and better than ever. We increased the freeboard by 3" while maintaining the same sheer lines that made the Eastern 18' famous. We opted to improve the finish by adding an inner liner for that clean appearance. For longevity, we went with an all composite construction using a fiberglass stringer system and Nida-core in the deck and floor.

A true work boat, it sports a Cummins 5.9 355HP, w/block heater, a 6hp dual prop bow thruster, and Hurricane diesel fired furnace. Its primary use is to act as a command center in case of emergency along the coast or in the Piscataqua River.
Eastern Boats in Puerto Rico
|
In January, we proudly finished two 31' fishing vessels for the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture. Both vessels were outfitted with hydraulic pot haulers and were awarded to two local fishermen to use. It was quite a pleasure working with them via e-mail and fax. Roger flew to Puerto Rico in August to meet with the actual fishermen. Dockwise Transport shipped the boats from Florida to St. Thomas where they were motored to Puerto Rico.
